Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Around two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime, which is why regular skin checks matter.
What’s involved
A skin check is a thorough head-to-toe examination of your skin using a dermatoscope — a specialised magnifying tool that helps your doctor look closely at moles, freckles, and any changes in your skin. The examination usually takes 15–30 minutes.
When to book a skin check
- You notice a new or changing mole, freckle, or spot
- You have a personal or family history of skin cancer
- You’ve had significant sun exposure or sunburn
- You haven’t had a skin check in the past 12 months
What happens next
If anything unusual is found, your doctor will discuss the next steps with you, which may include a biopsy, monitoring, or referral.
