Iron Infusion Therapy
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in Australia. For people who can’t tolerate or aren’t responding to oral iron supplements, an iron infusion can be an effective alternative — delivering iron directly into the bloodstream under medical supervision.
Who might benefit
Your GP may consider an iron infusion if:
- Oral iron supplements have not worked or have caused side effects
- You have ongoing blood loss or absorption issues
- You need to restore iron levels quickly (for example, before surgery or during pregnancy under specialist guidance)
- Your blood test results show low iron stores (ferritin)
What to expect
An iron infusion takes around 30–60 minutes. You’ll be seated comfortably while the iron is delivered through an IV. A doctor and nurse remain on-site throughout the appointment to monitor you.
An assessment with your GP is required before booking an infusion.
